How to Design a Star Wars Boy’s Room

October 2020

Star Wars are a big thing in our household. Ryan and our son love to build Star Wars LEGO sets, and often find instructions for new sets to make out of our existing LEGO pieces. For major milestone rewards, Star Wars LEGOs have been our prize. So naturally when it came to updating our son’s bedroom last year, Star Wars was the front-runner theme. I started looking for inspiration ideas on Pinterest, but didn’t find a lot at the time. Here is how our room upgrade (our big boy transition) turned out for us.

We started out by painting his room with a featured blue wall, surrounded by light grey in the rest of the room to brighten things up in our gloomy Pacific Northwest. I had a painting I made for his Newfoundland Dog theme room he had as a baby and toddler, in honor of our amazing Newfie Cera. I decided to repurpose the canvas painting I’d made over his bed to be a Tie Fighter outline. I wanted a few more interesting art pieces and found these Star Wars ship schematic prints on Amazon. I really love this Millennium Falcon print. They look like chalked prints without the mess. I bought these black poster frames to match. I wanted one more art piece with some texture, and found this wood cutout of the Death Star on Etsy that I spray painted a light coat of black so you can still see the wood grain come through.

We found a grey Ikea Hemnes dresser for under the prints to replace his older wooden changing table/dresser. I also picked up some Ikea containers for little things and keepsakes.

We replaced an older living room chair we’d given him with this one from Target. Lately it’s more of a pillar for a blanket fort but it’s nice to have something to sit in to help him dressed.

For his side table, we needed a way to corral books. We got a small bookcase from Ikea, and used his existing lamp. I added a Darth Vader clip to it just because… why not?

We transitioned him out of his crib a few years before this room update, but we were using his crib converted as a bed. I wanted to upgrade his bed and bought a full size wooden and metal industrial frame style, like this one, from Wayfair. I loved some other options but didn’t really want to spend much on the bedframe since he’s growing like a weed and likely will need to move to a queen size bed in a few years. For bedding, we found this great Star Wars set on Amazon, which go well with these fun star cutout curtains (also room darkening = plus!).

I took an updated picture with his books in rainbow pattern (if you’ve been reading, I am making over my home in organized The Home Edit style!). With final details like a Star Wars LEGO storage case, and some wooden crates we stained grey for more stuffie storage, he’s set for now. We’ll see what theme’s he’s into later, but I’m hoping this will take him several years into his pre-teen/early teens and then can be easily updated with fresh art, curtains and bedding.
