Our fireplace is done! Nearly five months ago we started a backyard overhaul which added some covered space and a more permanent firepit. Our concept was to integrate the firepit area into the retaining wall and use the stone to develop a bench feature–see How to Add a Unique Backyard Firepit.
Part of the challenge with this design was finding ways to soften the hardscape. While a stone bench is a thing of beauty, it’s not overly comfortable for hours. Nichole bought some excellent outdoor cushions that are portable and can be stored nearby and repurposed some pillows that we had. The blanket was knit by a family member (something we’ll protect from the embers of the fire for sure!).
Unfortunately, we don’t get much of a reprieve from the rains this time of year. In a rare moment of sunshine, and between bobcats playing in our backyard, we got a shot of the finishing touches – our Belgard Melville Charcoal capstones. It only took five weeks for the supply to catch up to the demand due to the popularity of Belgard products.

- Granite gravel: it’s cool mix of white and black accent rocks that is super fine (2,800 lbs a yard so be careful in the back of your truck)
