Updating our 18-foot high Chandelier in our Entryway

September 2020

This project was swapping out our chandelier entryway light and testing my fear of heights. Most of our projects start in a similar way. Nichole mentions something that she wants to update or shows me something she really likes, and I usually claim that “You pick it. I stick it!” I stole that from a movie. This project was one that made me really think more about the “should” I do it part.

The challenge: our entryway chandelier light was connected to a sloped ceiling (not roof) that was nearly 18 feet in the air. There was lots of online tutorials showing scaffolding or methods to build braces off your existing wall if near a stairwell. Building scaffolding on our hardwood floors and risking the damage was not an option. So, I called my friendly local R&R Rentals shop and lo and behold, they had a 16-foot step ladder. It was an experience bringing a ladder nearly as long as my truck home as was maneuvering it in through the front door and finding space to set it up. I definitely needed Nichole to help me unfold and stand it up inside the house.

Rented a large ladder to reach the ceiling

Before and After with New Light Installation

The light we picked was the Kichler Abbotswell Pendant. We have done a few light updates using Kichler products and so far so good!

Useful Tools for this Project

  • Wire cutters and strippers – love my Klein Long Nose Cutters
  • Wall Texture if the existing canopy is larger (our existing was 6-inch compared to 5-inch on new light)
  • Vinyl electrical tape and wire nuts although most light kits come with wire nuts
  • Drill
  • Safety Glasses (you’ll be working above your head)
