There were a lot of lessons from this series of projects for our daughters room. I had this wonderful thought about spraying with an airless sprayer — it was a spectacular failure. Such is life. At least you can sand your way out of those failures..
Involve the Kiddos
One of the great things about this project series was our daughter’s design and finish input. We didn’t deliver on her request for a rainbow painted bookcase but we did keep it simple per her request — no doors and windows.

Prep and Sand.
For this project we used Spruce as it has lots of character. It’s great to work with in the PacNW as the price point is reasonable. Fill areas with a good wood putty and sand smooth. You can use some painters caulk to cover larger gaps if you have some.
Prime and Paint.
A coat of Zinsser primer was used to cover the first product and sanded smooth for the Benjamin Moore top coats. We painted the top of the bookcase Simply Pink but it just didn’t match the room décor Nichole envisioned. Back to all white!
A consideration with using Benjamin Moore Advance is the painting temperature range. With temperatures dipping below 50F (which isn’t very cold for most garages) we needed to bring our painting project inside.
TIP: Benjamin Moore Advance is a great product that lays fairly flat and smooth with a decent mohair roller and a good brush. Plan your paint areas as you don’t want to go back over it after 1-2 minutes from the initial coat (also known as “over-working” the paint).
Add Accents.
Nichole put contact paper on the larger boxes within the bookcase to give it some character! Check out the wallpaper and other decor items we added here. Our daughter loves the birds and is a nice variation on the rest of the butterflies in the room.
