Bedroom Refresh with Sconce Lights

December 2020

This past weekend we spent some time brightening our bedroom (see aforementioned missiontobrightenhome posts). We’ve lived in our house for a few years now, and it was time for another paint refresh (among other things). When we moved in, our bedroom was original builder beige. Beige walls, ceilings and carpet, all the same color throughout. We’ve been updating, upgrading, painting and repainting over the years.

Here’s what it looks like after our weekend warrior projecting:

This is a flavor of what it looked like when we bought our builder box:

For our first bedroom paint cycle, we painted the walls and ceiling Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. That was nice for a short period of time. We really wanted to get rid of the ceiling trim work and make it more symmetrical, but bids were out of control. So we did the best we could to brighten the ceiling and painted our trim and ceiling Benjamin Moore White Dove. That helped trick my eyes that our ceiling was raised.

A few weeks ago we started slowly repainting the house. I had planned on doing our bedroom walls either Benjamin Moore Dove Wing or Pale Oak. As luck would have it, we had a 5 pound paint bucket left over from our downstairs paint refresh project. I’ll gladly take “free” paint for this project. The Pale Oak is customized to be lightened. It turned out to be perfect. It’s tough to depict the exact color in a photo, but it is beautiful in person.

Now that we’re done painting, I’m updating some artwork and photos. We had these aluminum frames for under $30 a piece from Amazon. They paired well with Revere Pewter, but I’m waiting on some gold and black ones to match the new sconces and colors better.

For our new colors, we’re going with these:

and some of these:

In addition to new bedding and wall paint, one of the two things that have brought this room together the most is the new wood wrapped frame we built for under $100 (here’s how). We had purchased another print from Juniper Print Shop, but the pinks in that picture look much better in my office (here’s what that’s looking like). I decided to replace the floating frame image with a whiter/grayer print from Collection Prints.

The other thing that really brought this room together are the new gold sconces we got for under $130 for both. You can get them here. Here’s another option that we like too.

These are really great for the money spent. We thought about hard wiring sconces before we painted, but we didn’t feel up to the electrical work and drywall repair. These plug in and include cord covers as well. You can adjust the arms to the spot you’d like. Really pleased with these and they are a great value, too!

Prior to hanging the sconces, we had these lights from Home Goods. They were nice but just didn’t really fit as well after the paint and frame went up.

The sconce lights really bring things together (and the lighting is brighter!).

A few other sconce light options are here, here and here.

Our bed frame is from Room and Board with a custom upholstery. It’s really held the test of time over the past few years (although I don’t know how much crazy cat will destroy it when she’s running like a maniac across the top). Here’s a similar bed, or this one is nice for a lighter look.

Our bedside tables are from Wayfair. We got them about two years ago. You can find them here. They haven’t managed to scratch or have water marks, but I bought these real marble trays to sit on top for our drinks, to make sure to keep the tops of the bedside tables protected. They are out of stock so here are some similar trays.

Update: we added a rug, which I found a great deal on at Home Goods. It’s a Loloi rug. I had been looking online at Loloi rugs, and seeing one in person helped me realize why so many people love them. This one is made in Turkey and is soft to the touch, has faint fringe ends on two ends and looks very well made. I found it for 1/3 of what it sells for online for a 7×10 size. Here’s a similar one, and a few other options are here, and here.

I’ll post another update of more decor we’ve been adding once we get the final pieces together. I love looking at this photo before my sweet little girl brought all her stuffies into my bed to have a sleepover with me. I don’t think it will look so pulled together again.
