The planning is on! Ryan and I are working on our plans for our next DIY furniture build. One thing we’ve learned is that the right tools are SO IMPORTANT. So is the right workspace for building level furniture pieces. With that in mind, we’re doing some more prep to start building some bigger furniture pieces for our formal living room.
I’ve been researching options online. It’s shown me that what I want is a pair of custom cabinets. While I love so many of the ones I’ve found, I want two slightly shorter cabinets flanking my white fireplace. I’ve thought about IKEA hacks to get there, but I think a build from scratch is the way to go.
Here are the inspiration pieces for Black Cabinets I love.
West of Main Frankfurt Cabinet
This West of Main Frankfurt Cabinet is gorgeous. Pairing it with another = even more gorgeousness. I love the simple thin wood lines, and interior stained wood peaking through. At print time, it was CA$3,798 for one. That price gets you artisan cabinets with bonus drawers. This is a bit more than we can spend right now, but drooling over this.
Eclectic Goods Cecielle Cabinet
Oh, if I were only a skilled iron worker. Ryan seems to be able to do nearly anything, so I guess we can’t rule out him grabbing a welding kit and some metal pieces. This piece is a beauty, and I love the white interior peaking through the narrow window pane frames. At $1550.00, this iron cabinet seems well worth the price of durable metal.
Lindye Galloway Bixby Hutch
The Bixby Hutch by Lindy Galloway is another gorgeous inspiration cabinet. This piece has an arch that distinguishes it from the others. At $3,450, this bookcase can double as a hutch, bookcase, display cabinet or closet!
Eclectic Goods Clayton Cabinet
With a shorter height in mind, the Clayton Cabinet from Eclectic Goods is another option I’ve been scoping out. At $1,495, this piece is closer to the size I need for the space. It’s also beautiful, with interior drawers that I could use for smaller things.
Spencer Curio Cabinet
This is the closest to what I think our final pieces will look like. At about $1850, the Spencer Curio Cabinet by Fourhands has thin framed doors with a thin profile, and sits on iron legs. Our version may be smaller, but this one is so good!
IKEA Fabrikor
For a lower cost option that we have considered modifying, the IKEA Fabrikor has some potential. We have considered wrapping the base with wood, and replacing the shelves with wood instead of glass.
I think Ryan can try his hand at something based on these examples. If not, one of these may be in my living room soon. Stay tuned for whether we can pull it off.
